Get into national parks, forests free Nov. 11

To extend a general “thank you” for those who served our country, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior has announced that all public lands managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation will be free of admission charges on Veterans Day, Wed. Nov. 11th.

The Dept. of Agriculture also announced that national forests will also be free from admission that day.

New movies for $9.98 at Wal-Mart

Once again, Wal-Mart is taking a loss on a new media release, hoping to get you into the stores or onto its website.

First, it was new best-seller books for only $9. Now, the megastore is offering new release DVD movies to preorder for only $9.98 with free shipping to your home.

Wal-Mart has to pay the production distributors an average of $18 each for the movies, so they’re taking a hit on these, hoping you’ll shop enough on other goods to make up for it. Meanwhile, you can take advantage!

Holiday Memories start today at Old Towne Orange

Starting today, Old Towne Orange (that’s right, isn’t it? I never remember where to put the goofy fake “e”) is hosting its annual “Holiday Memories” event, now through Sunday.

This event starts each day at 10 a.m. and goes until 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6 p.m. on Sunday. It includes holiday lighting and decorations, in-store promotions, refreshments, antique appraisals and more.

If you get a special “passport” and get it stamped by 10 participating merchants, you can enter a drawing to win gift certificates and prizes.

Free Shark Lagoon night tonight at Aquarium

Tonight is free Shark Lagoon night where you can pet sharks and listen to live music at the Aquarium of the Pacific. My kids love to do this.

To clarify, the entire aquarium is not open tonight, just the outdoor Shark Lagoon in the rear. When you arrive, someone will direct you to the back entrance.

Hours tonight are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The band tonight is the Kent Quintet, which plays traditional jazz.

Cheap dates: Free concert at Walt Disney Hall

Want your date to think you’re really classy? Take him or her to downtown Los Angeles to Walt Disney Hall.

This fabulous concert venue became an instant landmark when it opened in 2003. Its remarkable shape meant it cost so much to build that many skeptics, myself included, thought they’d never raise the money to get it off the ground.

I’m happy to say I was wrong!

The venue is sponsoring a series of free World City events, including the Saturday, Nov. 14 morning concert by the Russian group Barynya that includes dance and music. If you miss this one, several other free World City events will also be held in 2010.

Tickets are free and are only given out on site, so get there in advance of the 10 a.m. box office opening. The show is at 11 a.m. There’s a second show at 12:30, in case you can’t get a ticket at 11 a.m.

You’re going to have to pay to park, look for the lot across the street, it’s cheaper than the $9 at Disney Hall. Don’t settle for a meter, too likely you’ll get a pricey ticket!

There’s a cafeteria at Disney Hall where you can have lunch afterward. It’s run by Patina so it’s pricey, but if you’re careful you should be able to stay within our $25 budget for the date.

Or you can drive to another famous landmark nearby, the Grand Central Market, which was the original produce mart of the pueblo of Los Angeles. It’s loaded with atmosphere, you can get a cheap lunch here and also come home with bags full of cheap produce. It’s fun!

Budget buster: It might also be fun to take the train! You can take Amtrak, for example, from Fullerton for $18 roundtrip to Los Angeles Union Station, then walk over to Disney Hall. The highest fare to L.A. from O.C. is $32 roundtrip from San Clemente. This blows our budget, but I just wanted to throw it out there as an option, because, well, going on the train is fun. You can get a 10% AAA discount.

Aquarium is free Nov. 11 for vets, military, cops & fire

If you are a veteran, police, firefighter or military, consider taking advantage of the Tuesday, Nov. 11 Veterans Day “get in free” day at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.

You’ll need to show a valid I.D.

The aquarium is open until 5 p.m.

Personally, I like to watch the otters, though the seals can be entertaining too.
