Ski this holiday weekend for half price

February 9th, 2010, 1:18 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

snowvalley16Look below for a printable coupon that will get you half-price lift tickets at Snow Valley for this weekend, even though it’s a holiday, and also the entire winter season.

Most special ski deals exclude the upcoming Presidents Day weekend, but not this deal.

Click here to go to the Snow Valley 50% lift ticket off coupon that can be used for up to six people.

I just talked to Megan Enroe, the PR person for Snow Valley, and she said the coupon specifically says “NO BLACKOUTS.”

However, she said there’s a glitch on the online ticketing purchase system that’s supposed to be fixed soon. It is preventing people from buying advance tickets for the weekend, when they’re using the coupon.

If you try to buy tickets online and there’s a problem,  you can just print out the coupon and bring it with you, or if necessary, call Enroe at work, 949-252-8737 or cell 714-333-1426.

My friend took my kids up there Monday and they had a lot of fun. (He used the half price coupon and I paid full price for my kids’ lessons, btw, because unlike other blogsites, Register bloggers don’t accept freebies.)

Click here to go to Snow Valley’s main website.

There’s a webcam on there if you want to check out the conditions with your own eyes.

IKEA specials in Costa Mesa this month

February 8th, 2010, 11:07 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

ikeaentrancemedsizewebIf you’ve been longing to go to IKEA–and who hasn’t–then you’ll want to pore over this monthly calendar.

It includes weekly specials and events, such as craft days for kids and specials on their restaurant meals.

Of course, you know you can leave your kids in their Smaland play room while you shop.  My kids used to love that when they were little. They’re going to have free face painting on Saturday (Feb. 13).

And note that there’s a free flooring installation workshop Saturday (Feb. 13) at noon, in case you’ve been thinking about doing it yourself.

Notice they’re also offering their Big Blue Bag for 59 cents, which is a good deal and those things are really useful!

And here’s a tip from an employee that I got one day when my feet had just worn out:  You can cut through the store diagonally instead of going around and around in circles on the path they’ve laid out for you.  Give it a try!

Free fun at Dana Point whale festival

February 8th, 2010, 10:36 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

danapointwhalefestival2010Dana Point is planning its annual whale extravaganza this year for the weekends of March 6-7 and 13-14.

As you may know, gray whales are now starting to head back north toward Alaska and the Bering Sea after mating and giving birth down in lagoons in Baja California.

Some people estimate that 40-50 whales swim by the Dana Point headlands every day, where they can be seen from the bluffs.

The city of Dana Point likes to celebrate the whale swim-by with an annual event.

There are lots of fun free activities including a parade, street fair, car shows, concerts, movies, historical walking tour, outrigger canoe race, free fishing clinic for kids and more.

If you want to pay a few bucks, there are also lectures and events at the Ocean Institute.

There’s a free shuttle bus, too.

Cheap things to do on a rainy day

February 6th, 2010, 12:29 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

aquariumofthepacific1It’s no fun to be stuck in the house on a rainy day, right?

Well, if you want something new to do, here are some cheap or free ideas for things you can do, even when it’s raining outside.

Maybe you can’t ride your bike, but, hey, you can go to a cheap movie, or take the kids to an indoor playland.

Fast food restaurants with indoor playlands:*

Got kids who need exercise and are driving you crazy today? You don’t need to go to an expensive gym! Here are some indoor playlands where they can get their ya-yas out. Just buy a soda or a kids’ meal and you’re in.

Go to the aquarium on a rainy day

February 5th, 2010, 11:12 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

aquariumofthepacificIf you’ve been to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, you’re probably wondering why I’m suggesting you should go in the rain.

After all, the entire Shark Lagoon, ray and turtle exhibits and Lorikeet Forest areas are outdoors.

But here’s the secret: The aquarium will give you a rain check that’s good for free admission to return again later!

So you get to enjoy all three of the main indoor galleries, your kids can run around and see the many creatures there, (maybe even get tired) and then you get to come back later for free!

Plus, they say they’ll have special interactive weather programs on rainy days.

Not such a stupid idea after all, eh?

A Valentines Day gift for your ex

January 29th, 2010, 10:43 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

solarpoweredcockroachSo not everyone will be celebrating Valentines Day this year cooing over a glass of champagne in a dimly lit restaurant.

Some of us will be grinding our teeth, seething at the injustice done to us by that special someone in the past, who deserves to wake up and be turned into a cockroach like in the famous short story by Kafka.

Well, here’s the perfect anti-Valentines Day gift from Focalprice.com for that “special someone” you no longer want to hug:

Here’s a solar-powered cockroach you can buy from Focalprice.com

It only costs $2.09 including shipping, and, hey, it lasts longer than a dead fish.

Come to think of it, my teenage son would probably like one too, just because he’s a boy.

Learn to ski cheap. And free rentals!

January 26th, 2010, 8:25 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

bearmountain21January is “Learn a Snow Sport Month” and, seriously, could there be a better time to learn to ski or snowboard in Southern California?

People are saying the conditions haven’t been this good for years. And the road is open now, as of Tuesday morning, with chains or 4WD.

And you should take lessons.  Really.  With this package, you can take a lesson up in Big Bear as cheaply as buying a lift ticket! In fact, this deal means you’re only paying $5 more for a four-hour package with rentals than for a two-hour lesson by itself.

Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are both offering an adult “Learn to Ski” package for adult first-timers, ages 13 and up, through the end of January, for $69.

You get four hours of ski or board lessons, lift ticket and rentals.

Kids ages 8-12 years old who are first-timers also have the same bargain, only for $59.

And with their “Guaranski” program, they guarantee you’ll ski down the beginner hill  by the end of the day, or you’ll keep getting lessons until you do.

That’s a good deal!

You need to buy this package online in advance.

Ideas for fun, cheap home birthday parties

January 18th, 2010, 9:22 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer
Can't afford Disneyland this year? Who can?

Can't afford Disneyland this year? Then have your party at home.

Sick of Chuck E. Cheese for your kid’s birthday?  Me, too, whew.  (Well, OK, I was sick of it five minutes after I walked in the door.)

Can’t afford to rent out Disneyland or take the kids to the Ritz Carlton this year?  That’s a crying shame.

And, Disneyland’s not free on your birthday anymore.

So why don’t you have the party at home this year, and do it all yourself?

Click here to go to BirthdayIdeas4Kids.com, where they’ve collected mountains of good ideas for giving a party at home.

They’ve even got prepared lists of scavenger hunt items, which my kids really love at parties. Great idea!

I also like the idea of holding a “Tween Idol” contest using a karoake machine. Fun!

Seriously, you can do it.

And it will be fun, too. I had 30 kids at my daughter’s doggie-themed party last year, and, while it was crazy, it was also a huge success. And I drew or cut out all the designs myself for the games and prizes.

Go to Dollar Tree or the 99 Cent Only store to get your party supplies.

99centluau2web

Party supplies for 99 cents

Dollar Tree also has colorful Mylar helium balloons for a buck each, a couple of those make nice party decorations. Just make sure they were blown up recently so the helium will last.

In the spring, dollar stores also start putting out cheap luau supplies, which can be a fun party theme for a birthday, graduation or any time,  really.

The biggest selection I saw last year was at the 99 Cent Only store.

You don’t need to hire a clown or a petting zoo, either.

And, I might add, I never make goodie bags for kids to take home, and no one even notices.  When my kids bring those home from other people’s parties, the first thing I do is find the whistles and throw them away. Then all the other junk ends up scattered around the floor where I step on it. No, thanks. Save the money and aggravation.

Big sale and coupon at Justice for Girls

January 15th, 2010, 11:32 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

justicelogo1Justice for Girls has a big sale underway right now where seems like one-third of the store’s items are marked down.

And, you can capitalize on that, by using this 40% off coupon that’s good even on sale items!

You have to print out the coupon and bring it with you if you go to the store.

I need a deal like that to shop at Justice, because I find the prices higher than the quality rates, but the clothing styles are so cute and exactly what my daughter loves, so when there’s a good sale, we’ll be there.

iceskatingshoeHave you been yearning to do some figure eights?

Maybe the Winter Olympics is reminding you that there are places in the world cold enough to skate on ice and you want to try it for yourself.

In that case, check out the Great Park from Jan. 30 to Feb. 28, where you can ice skate for free. That’s right, I said free.

And the skate rentals are free, too.

Read the web page for more detailed information, including how to get same-day advance tickets for the skating sessions.

Each session is 45 minutes long, from 11 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Park officials put on a skating event last year in one of the historic hangars that was a big success.

Get in free Sunday to Museum of Latin American Art

December 17th, 2009, 10:00 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

moolaaNot only can your entire family get into the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach for free Sunday, but there’s also a cool art workshop for kids that’s also free.

My kids have done these workshops, and I am really impressed with their quality.

Sunday’s workshop is devoted to the Mexican holiday tradition of Las Posadas:

1–3 p.m.:  Art Workshops—Ojos de Dios, star fold books & Pinatas
3 p.m.:  Choir Performance
3:30 p.m.:  Hot chocolate and pan dulce!

Sunday’s freebie is one of the Target Free Sundays programs that offers free museum tickets to people on various weekends.  I don’t usually feel the need to thank large corporations. But in this case, I will say thanks, Target. One of my pet peeves is the high cost of admission to events and places in the middle of a recession, so I appreciate this particular marketing campaign.

It’s free Shark Lagoon night at the aquarium

December 11th, 2009, 7:50 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

sharklagoonnightTonight is free Shark Lagoon night where you can pet sharks and listen to live music at the Aquarium of the Pacific.  My kids love to do this.

To clarify, the entire aquarium is not open tonight (Dec. 11), just the outdoor Shark Lagoon in the rear. When you arrive, someone will direct you to the back entrance.

Hours tonight are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The live band tonight is Ronny & the Classics.

Free classic movie Friday night

December 9th, 2009, 9:07 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

cat-and-the-canaryThe Long Beach School for Adults is scheduled to show the classic movie  The Cat and the Canary Friday night at 7 p.m.

Even though I’m an old movie buff and a fan of Bob Hope’s comedies, I’ve never seen this flick. So we might have to check it out Friday night, since it looks like it contains some good laughs.

The screenings take place in an auditorium, with classic cartoons, short subjects and trailers, just like the real thing!

This season is featuring films from the great year 1939, which included such classics as Gone With the Wind.

Even if you’ve rented these movies and watched them on your TV, it’s worth going to see them on a big screen, as the filmmakers intended.

Full Schedule for 1939 series:
Dec. 11, 2009: The Cat and the Canary / Flying Deuces (Double  Feature)  (Bob Hope & Laurel & Hardy)
Dec. 18, 2009: Gone With the Wind

> Holiday Break

Jan. 8, 2010: Midnight (w/ Claudette Colbert & Don Ameche)
Jan. 15, 2010: Adventures of Sherlock Holmes / Charlie Chan on
Treasure Island
(Double Feature) (w/ Basil Rathbone &  Sidney Toler)
Jan. 22, 2010: Idiot*s Delight (w/ Clark Gable & Norma Shearer
Jan. 29, 2010: Naughty But Nice (w/ Dick Powell and Ann Sheridan)

How to get there:
The Friday Film Forum is located at The Long Beach School for Adults, 3701 E. Willow St., Long Beach, CA. 90815 (located just of the 405: take Lakewood Blvd. off ramp and go south to first light at Willow St.  Turn right and proceed 1/4 mile to LBSA campus on right side (north) of street.  It  sits between the Grand Convention Center, the Jewish Community  Center and Harriman Jones medical center.  Across the street from the DMC facility.
