Ski this holiday weekend for half price

February 9th, 2010, 1:18 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

snowvalley16Look below for a printable coupon that will get you half-price lift tickets at Snow Valley for this weekend, even though it’s a holiday, and also the entire winter season.

Most special ski deals exclude the upcoming Presidents Day weekend, but not this deal.

Click here to go to the Snow Valley 50% lift ticket off coupon that can be used for up to six people.

I just talked to Megan Enroe, the PR person for Snow Valley, and she said the coupon specifically says “NO BLACKOUTS.”

However, she said there’s a glitch on the online ticketing purchase system that’s supposed to be fixed soon. It is preventing people from buying advance tickets for the weekend, when they’re using the coupon.

If you try to buy tickets online and there’s a problem,  you can just print out the coupon and bring it with you, or if necessary, call Enroe at work, 949-252-8737 or cell 714-333-1426.

My friend took my kids up there Monday and they had a lot of fun. (He used the half price coupon and I paid full price for my kids’ lessons, btw, because unlike other blogsites, Register bloggers don’t accept freebies.)

Click here to go to Snow Valley’s main website.

There’s a webcam on there if you want to check out the conditions with your own eyes.

Here are your deals for Tuesday, Feb. 9

February 9th, 2010, 11:01 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer
sandywateringtomatoes

My daughter watering our tomato plants this summer

Happy Tuesday, well, sort of happy because they say it’s going to rain again today and I am just over the rain. Really over it.

However,  my lawn is really flourishing from the wet stuff, after a very dry summer. And, hard for me to believe, but I just picked a few tomatoes off a tomato plant left over from the summer. Can you believe it?

Last month’s frost killed most of my tomato plants, but one of them just won’t give up. Amazing. That’s a metaphor for something I’m sure.  I took some pictures intending to do a whole post on whether it’s financially worthwhile to grow your own vegetables, but if you amortize the cost of the tomatoes over nine months, hey, it’s worth it! Meanwhile I guess it’s almost time to do that post a year late, right?

But I digress. Here are your deals today and, yay, it’s Tuesday! Tuesdays are great.

And don’t forget about the free Grand Slam breakfast at Denny’s today!

Today only, that’s the deal offered by the Diane Elizabeth Salon & Day Spa in Mission Viejo, now until 7 p.m.

Employees are donating their time today, and say that 100% of the money raised by their “Haircuts For Haiti!” special will go to the Salvation Army Haiti Earthquake Relief.

IKEA specials in Costa Mesa this month

February 8th, 2010, 11:07 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

ikeaentrancemedsizewebIf you’ve been longing to go to IKEA–and who hasn’t–then you’ll want to pore over this monthly calendar.

It includes weekly specials and events, such as craft days for kids and specials on their restaurant meals.

Of course, you know you can leave your kids in their Smaland play room while you shop.  My kids used to love that when they were little. They’re going to have free face painting on Saturday (Feb. 13).

And note that there’s a free flooring installation workshop Saturday (Feb. 13) at noon, in case you’ve been thinking about doing it yourself.

Notice they’re also offering their Big Blue Bag for 59 cents, which is a good deal and those things are really useful!

Click here to go to the IKEA Costa Mesa Calendar for February

And here’s a tip from an employee that I got one day when my feet had just worn out:  You can cut through the store diagonally instead of going around and around in circles on the path they’ve laid out for you.  Give it a try!

Free fun at Dana Point whale festival

February 8th, 2010, 10:36 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

danapointwhalefestival2010Dana Point is planning its annual whale extravaganza this year for the weekends of March 6-7 and 13-14.

As you may know, gray whales are now starting to head back north toward Alaska and the Bering Sea after mating and giving birth down in lagoons in Baja California.

Some people estimate that 40-50 whales swim by the Dana Point headlands every day, where they can be seen from the bluffs.

The city of Dana Point likes to celebrate the whale swim-by with an annual event.

There are lots of fun free activities including a parade, street fair, car shows, concerts, movies, historical walking tour, outrigger canoe race, free fishing clinic for kids and more.

If you want to pay a few bucks, there are also lectures and events at the Ocean Institute.

There’s a free shuttle bus, too.

Pet health insurance: Do you need it?

February 7th, 2010, 9:21 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer
webbuddy_devil2

Our dog Buddy

I recently bought pet insurance for the first time for Buddy the Wonder Dog, since the skyrocketing cost of health care is not only affecting people, but animals too! And my kids would be pretty sad if anything happened to our naughty little pooch.

I finally made the leap, and spent the money, after Pet Tales editor Samantha Gowen told me that fixing one broken leg can cost thousands of dollars. Ouch!

I picked a plan that costs about $350 a year, and includes most veterinarian visits for ailments and injuries, but does not include preventive care like flea medicine or extreme cancer care. You can pay monthly, but I just chose to pay it in one lump sum to get the pain over with right away.

There are many plans — from dire emergencies only, all the way up to well dog visits and state-of-the-art cancer care. You can select the level for your own wallet and taste.

Personal finance writer Liz Weston has compared the pros and cons here on  “Should you buy pet insurance?”

And, totally seriously, I always do what Liz tells me to do.

Low-cost airline coming to Long Beach airport

February 6th, 2010, 2:02 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

allegiant1For those of you who want more airline choices without having to drive to LAX, the Long Beach Post reported this week that two new airlines, Frontier and Allegiant, will be coming to the Long Beach Airport this summer.

I’m not too familiar with Frontier in its latest incarnation, the Post is reporting it will be flying nonstop to Denver starting in May. But Allegiant is well-known as a bargain airline that offers incredible deals now out of LAX and reportedly plans to start operating out of Long Beach in August.

For example, right now you can fly Allegiant from LAX nonstop to Grand Junction, Colorado for $40 each way. And Billings, Montana for $70, Bellingham, Washington for $80 and Wichita, Kansas for $70.

Now, according to regular flyers who’ve posted reviews of the airline, being bargain basement also means that they try really, really hard to get you to pay more than their base fee, for example, they quote you one price for the flight, but then when you actually go to reserve, they try to get you to pay more for such luxuries as, say, a reserved seat.

But, apparently, if you stay strong and determined, you can actually get your seat for the original price quoted which is really darn cheap!

Here’s a travel story that Register travel editor Gary Warner wrote about the new airlines arriving in Long Beach

Cheap things to do on a rainy day

February 6th, 2010, 12:29 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

aquariumofthepacific1It’s no fun to be stuck in the house on a rainy day, right?

Well, if you want something new to do, here are some cheap or free ideas for things you can do, even when it’s raining outside.

Maybe you can’t ride your bike, but, hey, you can go to a cheap movie, or take the kids to an indoor playland.

Fast food restaurants with indoor playlands:*

Got kids who need exercise and are driving you crazy today? You don’t need to go to an expensive gym! Here are some indoor playlands where they can get their ya-yas out. Just buy a soda or a kids’ meal and you’re in.

*Readers, I would like to create a list of restaurants with indoor playlands, if you know one that’s not listed here, please share!

Here are your deals for Saturday, Feb. 6

February 6th, 2010, 10:35 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer
aquariumofthepacifickidonset

What I feel like in the rain today

Happy rainy Saturday, kids. My roof started leaking, which is really starting to make me question this whole “home ownership” thing. Why did I want to buy a house?

On a happier note, I have the weekend off and no games to haul the kids to. So, of course, I have time to blog for you. Hope you can find something here you can use!

And, while you’re looking at the photo to the right, remember that the Aquarium of the Pacific gives out rainchecks on rainy days, so you can enjoy the indoor exhibits and then come back for free on another day!

And, if it’s actually raining at the moment, the bakery outlet in Los Alamitos will give you a free bakery item if you spend $2.

And take note of Subway’s little rainy day secret special.

Stuff I like: Cafe La Llave

February 6th, 2010, 8:42 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

food4lessanddollartree-008Looking to save a little money on your coffee bill every month?

Try Cafe La LLave, a dark roast that is ground fine for brewing as espresso, but I use in my regular coffeemaker at home.

You can buy it in the grocery store in a can, or in a shrink-wrapped bag for a few cents less. If you buy it in the bag, make sure it’s rock hard so air hasn’t leaked into it.

Cafe La Llave, which advertises itself as made for the Latin palate, can be found in grocery stores for $3.49 to $4.50 for a 12-ounce can.

I’ve seen it at Food4Less, Superior and Stater Brothers, it may be in other markets as well.

I love the flavor, and the fine grind means I’m squeezing every last drop of coffee flavor out of the beans.

Since I’m lazy, I also like the fact that it comes ground, saves me a couple of extra minutes every day.

I also save money on coffee to go, by filling my insulated to-go mug, or buying packs of disposable coffee cups and lids at Smart and Final, the restaurant supply store, and using them instead of spending twice as much at Starbucks.

On the subject of coffee, Fast Food Maven has written here about a new Consumer Report on coffee tastings.

Which coffees do you like?

Go to the aquarium on a rainy day

aquariumofthepacificIf you’ve been to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, you’re probably wondering why I’m suggesting you should go in the rain.

After all, the entire Shark Lagoon, ray and turtle exhibits and Lorikeet Forest areas are outdoors.

But here’s the secret: The aquarium will give you a rain check that’s good for free admission to return again later!

So you get to enjoy all three of the main indoor galleries, your kids can run around and see the many creatures there, (maybe even get tired) and then you get to come back later for free!

Plus, they say they’ll have special interactive weather programs on rainy days.

Not such a stupid idea after all, eh?

What do you think about 1-800-Flowers?

February 3rd, 2010, 10:55 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer
valentineflowers1-800-flowers

1-800-Flowers $47.98 bouquet

Well, let me tell you.

I was all set to write about how 1-800-Flowers was offering free shipping and no delivery fees on Valentines Day bouquets sent between Feb. 8 and Feb. 12.

But, then, I read a long string of Facebook comments by unhappy former customers, complaining that the flowers weren’t fresh or delivered as ordered.

Then, I remembered that I ordered once from them years ago, to send flowers to my mom in Salt Lake City, and she told me afterward that the blooms all died the next day.

I didn’t complain, but, after that, I started calling a local florist in her city directly and charging with my credit card.

That way, I got exactly what I wanted, I talked to the people who were actually going to build the bouquet and deliver it, and I never got any more complaints about freshness.

This made me wonder: What other experiences have people had, positive or negative, with this company?

Visit Glen Ivy hot springs today for half price

February 3rd, 2010, 6:13 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

glenivyonset23This is a great time of year to go to Glen Ivy hot springs spa in Corona because it’s not crowded, and also it’s not too hot to enjoy soaking in toasty mineral water.

On Wednesdays this month, the spa is offering a special: $18.60 admission to celebrate their 150th anniversary.

That means you get a day of relaxing, soaking and mud bathing for less than half the usual admission price of $38.

I recently went just for the soaking, being too cheap to get a spa treatment, and it was very, very fine even without any pummeling.

If you’ve never been to Glen Ivy, it’s a lovely spot just off I-15 in Corona with various hot and cold mineral pools, landscaped with miniature waterfalls and generally very pleasant. I only wish I ever had time to go wine-tasting afterward before I rush back home to the kidlets.

No kids allowed at the facility, by the way.  So, moms, you can really relax.

It’s open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter.

This deal is only good until Feb. 28, so head on over!

And, if you can get away on a Tuesday or Thursday this month, you can get half off the normal admission price of $38, as long as you bring a buddy! Read the rest of this entry »

Save money: Roast your own chicken! It’s easy.

February 2nd, 2010, 1:47 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

roastedchicken1

If you like the taste and convenience of grabbing roasted chickens in the market to bring home, you’ve probably noticed that they’re getting smaller and smaller, yet more expensive every day.

The chickens at my local market now cost $6.99 and you get less than 3 pounds, including the bones!

That costs more than the sirloin steak that’s on sale right now at Ralphs! And it’s gotten to the point that one chicken won’t even feed my whole family for a single meal.

Pretty soon you’re going to need a magnifying glass to see the chickens before you buy them.

But, seriously, there’s something you can do about this:

Roast them at home yourself. You’ll save a ton of money.

I know, I know, a lot of cookbooks and cooking shows make this sound like it’s hard to do.  But I’m here to tell you, it IS INCREDIBLY EASY. Don’t be scared.

And, today, Feb. 2, you can buy roasting chickens at Albertsons on sale for 67 cents a pound, and at Fresh & Easy for 79 cents.

That sale will be over tomorrow, but you can find similar ones, and this is a great time of year to roast chickens.

It’s not too hot to use the oven, and it will warm up your house to boot. Read the rest of this entry »

Here are your deals for Tuesday, Feb. 2

February 2nd, 2010, 11:16 am by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer
smilingkitten

Gratuitous cute picture

Happy Tuesday! As you may know, I love Tuesdays because they’re some of the best bargain days of the week.

And, hey, even I learn something on my own blog! After a reader posted a comment on a post about gift cards that state law requires merchants to give you cash back if your gift card has less than $10 on it, I did some research and realized he was right!.

And, yesterday, I took my daughter to JoAnn fabrics to use a gift card she got for Christmas. (Santa brought her a sewing machine). After her purchases, there was $1.30 left on her gift card, and I asked the clerk for the cash back, as per state law. He refused.

Then, I asked for a supervisor, and she came over and amiably gave us the cash back.  So, the moral of the story is, don’t take “no” for an answer if you know your rights!

Hope you can find something here you can use!

Gift cards: Your rights under the law

January 30th, 2010, 3:02 pm by Marla Jo Fisher, Staff Writer

gamestop-gift-cardDid you get some gift cards for the holidays?
