Wine is so much a part of the culture in my household and with my friends these days that it makes me laugh to remember when I brought a bottle of wine to the Thanksgiving feast once at my grandparents’ house in Northern Colorado, on the prairie, which is kind of Willa Cather country.

Everyone at the table just looked at me like, “Hmm, isn’t that interesting. She brought wine.”

It was like no one had ever seen a bottle of wine before.  Fortunately, I also brought my own corkscrew.

They’re not teetotallers, they might have one beer on a hot day while watching the ball game, or the men might have a single shot of Jack Daniels or Crown Royal after dinner, but liquor is just not part of the culture there.

Liquor isn’t too important around my household these days since I’m raising two kids as a single mom (except when I get my son’s report card) but I certainly would not like to imagine my life without drinking wine.

Hey, we need the antioxidants, right?
