My Thanksgiving turkey 2008

Walmart has announced it will soon begin selling 12-pound turkeys for $5 each.

Keep in mind that is 40 cents a pound, while you can get Jennie-O premium basted turkeys right now at Fresh & Easy for 37 cents a pound.

Still,  the Walmart deal is convenient and it won’t last only one week, apparently since it’s part of a meal deal.

This is what Walmart is promising, from their press release:

A turkey dinner for eight as low as $20

According to a survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, last year’s average cost of a turkey was roughly $1.19 per pound. Beginning today, select Grade A turkeys are available for 40 cents per pound at Walmart.* These gobblers are part of Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving menu guaranteeing family favorites will be on the dinner table this holiday season. Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving feast includes:

  • One 12-pound Grade A turkey*
  • Three 11 to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables
  • Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce
  • Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing
  • One 5-pound bag of red potatoes
  • One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
  • One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake

They are cheating slightly - I see no drinks on that menu, no butter for the rolls, and items for turkey preparation. (or is it a preseasoned turkey?)

  • Karen Bannan says:

Is it really such a great idea to buy such cheap food? Something so cheap screams danger to me. I spent $75 on an organic turkey, and it was well worth it. Blogged about it today, actually. How can food be raised and packaged for $20? Just doesn’t sound right.

Are most Wal-Marts in OC expanding their grocery departments for the holidays? The one by me has a very limited selection of groceries most of the year.
No fresh produce, bakery items, fresh meat, etc.
