Romantic gifts stolen from the big screen

I’m a huge sucker for romance movies and this time of year, aren’t we all?

If you’re still looking for the perfect gift that won’t break the bank, check out these affordable ideas inspired by the big screen:

The Notebook: In the film an older man reads a timeless tale of love to his forgetful companion.  Buy an affordable blank book to write  your own love story in. Account your entire romantic story up to now and include a note specifying that together you will rest.

Titanic: I literally saw this movie four times in the theater when it came out. The romance of Rose (Kate Winslet), an upper-class traveler, and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), who won ticket for passage in the third class on the famous “Unsinkable” ship, is hard to forget. While the “Heart of the Ocean” would make a fun gift, it’s most likely out of our price range. Instead, opt to draw each other or sign up for art classes. You don’t have to do it in the nude like Rose did, but clothed or not it could make for a fun and memorable valentine experience.

Stranger Than Fiction: Will Farrell plays an auditor  whose life is being narrated and controlled by a neurotic novelist. He is sent to audit a rebellious baker (Maggie Gyllenhaal), whom he falls for.  In one scene he brings her “flours”. If the love in your life likes to bake, this is a great idea. Just head to your health food store and buy some small packets of specialty grains. For a personal look, package and label each in a small brown bag and box them together.

Lady and the Tramp: This Disney classic is easily my first favorite romance. When Lady, the house dog, falls for Tramp, the street scoundrel, they have a romantic evening of spaghetti. A candlelit dinner at home or out at a park with some homemade spaghetti makes for instant affordable romance.

Find your own Idea: These are just a few of many film-inspired ideas. Just look to any of your favorite romantic film classics for inspiration; from a Casablanca inspired flight log to  something more risque, a-la- Pretty Woman.
